Welcome back to the Genesis blog, the best place for new cannabis connoisseurs, or cannabis lovers who are looking for some helpful information about cannabis culture. In this blog series, we do our best to provide content that covers everything you need to know about consuming luxury cannabis.
Today, we’ll be giving you the rundown on everything that you’ll need to know about grinders, an essential smoking accessory we’ve touched on in a previous blog. We’ll talk about what they are, the types that exist, and just generally cover why they’re so great to have when you’re smoking cannabis.
What Are Grinders?
As the name suggests, the main function of a grinder is to grind, or break up, your cannabis. There are a few reasons why you should consider using a grinder to break up your cannabis, but ultimately it all boils down to efficiency.
Generally, breaking down your cannabis is a good idea because whether you’re using a pipe or you’re rolling up a blunt or joint, broken down cannabis is going to burn more evenly, as the cannabis will no longer be in the form of dense nuggets.
If you don’t have a grinder in tow, then you can use your fingers to break down bud, but it’s not as efficient or effective as using a grinder. Since that’s out of the way, let’s get into why grinders are the best way to break down your bud, and cover the tangible benefits you’ll see when you get one.
When you use a grinder, you’ll be using your cannabis more economically, which can be super clutch if you’re trying to make your cannabis last for an extended period of time. Grinders can make your cannabis use more economical in multiple ways. First off, you’ll no longer be losing bits of cannabis or kief that stick to your fingers when you try to break down the bud by hand.
Going further, breaking cannabis down by hand is a tedious and precarious process in the sense that you might accidentally drop bits of cannabis on the floor and it’s going to take a good amount of time to do it thoroughly. When you use a grinder, you simply load your cannabis, twist, and enjoy!
This means you’re saving time and cannabis when you use a grinder. Plus, there are styles of grinders that have kief collectors, so you can also be saving a stash of delectable trichomes while you’re simply breaking down flower for your daily smoke.
Types Of Grinders
When it comes to grinders, there are a lot to choose from. Stylistically, there are plenty of themes and novelty designs that you can choose from when looking for your perfect piece. However, we’re not going to be focusing on that today! We’re going to cover the differences between two-, three-, and four-piece grinders as well as different materials that make for a great grinder.
Two-Piece Grinders
Two-piece grinders consist of two pieces that form a chamber of interlocking teeth. To use a two-piece grinder, you simply separate the two pieces, place your desired amount of cannabis into the teeth, and then close it back up. Once the grinder is closed, simply twist each piece in opposite directions, and continue it until the cannabis is finely ground.
After you’ve ground your cannabis, dump it out and use it to pack your bowl or roll your joint!
Three-Piece Grinders
Three-piece grinders are extremely similar to two-piece grinders, but they add another component for convenience. You still have the two pieces with teeth that interlock to grind your cannabis, but there is also a collection chamber on the bottom for the ground cannabis can fall into. This means that the bottom grinding piece with teeth also has a series of holes in it so the cannabis can travel to the holding chamber.
The holding chamber included with a three-piece grinder is the next level in convenience, as they allow you to grind your bud and have it in holding, waiting to be smoked!
Four-Piece Grinders
Have you figured out the pattern yet? Four-piece grinders are similar to three-piece grinders, but they have an additional chamber.
So here’s the breakdown: you have your toothed pieces that grind your cannabis. From there, the cannabis falls through the lower toothed piece and into a holding container. Now, in the holding container, there is a fine metal mesh screen on the bottom of the chamber. This screen in the bottom of the holding chamber allows trichomes on the cannabis to fall through the screen. This screen leads to another holding chamber, and this is sometimes referred to as the kief collector. The trichomes collect there and provide you with your own stash of kief to use in your smoking endeavors. Not sure what kief is? Check out our blog that explains what it is!
How To Choose A Quality Grinder
Aside from choosing a grinder that will perform your desired function, there are a few features you can look out for to be certain that you’re making a sound investment when buying your new grinder.
First and foremost, check the material the grinder is made of. Most times you’ll find metal or plastic, but wooden grinders are also decently popular. We recommend investing in metal grinders because of their durability. While wooden or plastic grinders may look cool, there’s a good chance that they’ll break after extended use or in the event of falling off the floor. Titanium is the best quality when it comes to metal grinders, but any metal grinder should suit you well!
Beyond the material used for your grinder, before you commit make sure to twist the part of the grinder that you’ll use to break down your bud. If the grinder doesn’t twist smoothly that means it’s low quality, and you should look for something else.
